TASK
Tier 1 Automotive supplier located in South Central U.S. needed to gear up production of 67 new stampings from 55 new dies to produce SUV and truck frame parts and assemblies. Among these parts two of them require more then 300 in. of bolster to process.
SOLUTION
Two presses (2500 Ton 240" x 96") were set in tandem allowing each press to operate as an individual cell to process the majority of these parts. The offload exit conveyers running perpendicular to the flow and in opposite directions allows removal of finished parts.
Tandem parts utilize the between press shuttle to remove parts from the first press and deposit them for pickup at the entrance end of the second press.
The tandem process utilizes up to 480 in. of bolster.
SCOPE OF SUPPLY
GÜDEL's Press automation installed on each of the two presses feature ETR-0 Three-axis fully programable servo-transfer systems with 60 in. of pitch, 12in. of lift and 45.75 of clamp travel per side. Each press also features BDS-1 continuous operating blank destackers that can handle blanks as large as 40 in. x 98 in. For operation of the current two parts that require tandem operation GÜDEL also provided its standard between press shuttle. GÜDEL also fully turn keyed and intergrated the transfer fingers and part nests of each set of dies for each project.
RESULT
Stamper, Press builder, dieshops and GÜDEL combined to supply one of the most flexible and high production transfer systems in North America. Capabilities of utilizing up to 5000 Tons of press capacity over a 480" L to R bolster, extra large windows within the press accommodates blank widths up to 98 in. Automatic tool change for quick die change allows minimal down time from hit to hit.
With this said startup of the first 33 sets of dies for the truck program have been completed on time, with completion of the SUV program slated for the end of this year.
