TASK
British Nuclear Group are involved in the current de-commissioning programme throughout Britain, for the early Magnox Nuclear Power Stations.
The challenges faced by BNG are many and varied and they need to deploy automated systems into areas where human activity for extended periods would not be desired.
A particular application of emptying old storage areas of waste material required some form of overhead handling system that could deploy a standard Manipulator to collect the waste from the large storage tanks.
SOLUTION
BNG wanted to investigate if there was a standard “off the shelf” solution that could provide the strength and reliability of operation for this application.
GÜDEL built a standard Heavy Duty 3-axis Gantry System capable of accepting various Manipulators. The Gantry vertical axis was adapted to accept the Manipulator as required.
SCOPE OF SUPPLY
A GÜDEL FP-6 gantry module was fitted with a KUKA control system complete with hand held operator panel and all required software. All axes were servo driven to provide precise and smooth control. The gantry had all running guideways protected with a special impregnation to prevent corrosion on installation.
RESULT
The system has provided an “off the shelf” solution in a very short lead time. Traditionally, this type of equipment has been specifically designed to suit individual applications. The cost of the complete system is significantly less than a bespoke designed solution.
The GÜDEL family of Gantry Systems provides British Nuclear Group with the opportunity to build modular automated solutions for many applications in a short lead time at an acceptable cost.
