TASK
In the factory for train wheels, axles and wheelsets, unfinished wheels must be removed from a stack of wheels and deposited in a vertical lathe followed by a hub drilling machine..
A low ceiling height and the requirement not to build the portal over the middle of the machine’s spindle called for an extremely long gripper extension and an additional turn and rotation axis..
Wheel weight: max. 1,200 kg.
Wheel diameter: 700 - 1,270 mm.
Total weight, incl. gripper: 3,500 kg.

SOLUTION
A special ZP-8 dual-axis portal based on standard GÜDEL assemblies allowed the extremely high mass to be extended.
With a mass of 3,500 kg and an extension of 1,200 mm, the added TURN and ROTATE feature and the horizontal gripper arrangment, an insertion precision of +/- 0.5 mm had to be realized.

SCOPE OF SUPPLY
Special ZP-8, incl. unique gripper, rotation axis (NC), turn axis (hydr.) Wheel storage devices for 4 x 6 wheels (max. load 29 t) with 4 x 90° rotation (GÜDEL gears), protection system, Beckhoff PLC control, software, installation and initial start-up

RESULT
By turning the horizontal gripper, the train wheel can be deposited in the vertical lathe as well as the drilling machine outside the travel path and the wheel storage device. No complex area portal was required, which optimized the footprint and provided a compact solution for the available space.
