TASK
The objective of this installation is to polish commercial aircraft aluminum skin panels. The quality of the process is strictly correlated to the consistency of the pressure applied by the buffing wheel over the stretch formed skin held by the supporting tool.
SOLUTION
A custom 6 axis column machine is positioned across from a trunnion table capable of processing one part while the other is loaded/unloaded from outside the cell to maximize productivity. Automatic feedback from the polishing wheel head ensures the highest consistency of the polished surfaced by adapting to surface irregularities and tooling errors. The cell has a working envelope of X-13m, Y-4m and Z-1.5m.
SCOPE OF SUPPLY
Standard GÜDEL guideway system was implemented (size 90 mm flat bar) coupled with helical rack (m=6) and worm gearboxes (AE120). The harsh environment of the process caused by the polishing compound is a particular good fit for the cam follower characteristics and robustness of the GÜDEL guideway system.
RESULT
A tedious unsafe manual process was successfully automated, reducing manufacturing cost and improving productivity at the same time.
